FLORENCE NELL DREWRY PITTMAN ASHBY

Nell Drewry Ashby, 68, wife of Fred B. Ashby Sr., passed away Friday, June 20, 2003 at her home. 

Born Feb. 2, 1935 in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Hattie West Drewry and Irvin D. Drewry. Nell volunteered with the Southampton County Extension Office. She also worked extensively with the Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary. She was an Avon representative for many years. Nell loved to cook and work out of her kitchen as a caterer until she began working at the Southeast Airfield 4-H Conference Center in Wakefield as the Food Service Manager. She was a longtime member of Ivor Baptist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was predeceased by a sister, Martha Drewry; a brother, Earl Drewry; a sister-in-law, Rose Drewry; and husband, Ernest Williams Pittman. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Audrey P. Seeley and husband Scott of Wakefield; stepdaughter, Anne Ashby Babb of Courtland; stepson, Freddy B. Ashby Jr. and wife Rita of Franklin; grandchildren, Lauran B. Seeley, Savannah J. Seeley, Elizabeth B. Munn and husband Mike, Frances B. Keene and husband Bill, Jennifer R. Ashby and Brandon E. Ashby; brother, George S. Drewry of Suffolk; sister, Elsie Beasley and husband, Lonnie of Charlottesville; sister-in-law, Doris Drewry; nephews, Gordon Drewry, Allen Drewry and wife, Carol; nieces Nancy, Deborah, Earlene and Teresa; and great-nephews, Sam and Phillip. 

A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Ivor Baptist Church, Ivor, with the Rev. Steve Gupton officiating. Interment will follow in Ivor Cemetery . The family will receive friends today from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield. Memorial donations may be made to the Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Ivor Baptist Church.

Born 2 February 1935 in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Hattie West Drewry and Irvin D. Drewry. Nell volunteered with the Southampton County Extension Office.
