Obituary of JAMES POPE Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - September 27, 1996 James Pope died Sept. 26, 1996, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A lifelong resident of Southampton County, he retired in 1987 after 31 years' service at Hercules Inc., Franklin. He was a member of Boykins United Methodist Church and secretary of the Bland Bible Class of the church. He was a charter and honorary member of the Boykins Volunteer Fire Department. His parents were the late George P. and Grace Dunlow Pope. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Johnson Pope; two sons, Carlton E. Pope of Conway, N.C., and J. Dale Pope and his wife, Donna, of Boykins; a brother, Ralph Martin of Halifax, N.C.; two granddaughters, Donna P. White and her husband, Jim, of Franklin; a grandson, James M. 'Matt' Pope of Boykins; two great-grandchildren, Kayla B. White and James D. 'Little Jim' White, both of Franklin; two aunts, Maggie Pope of Capron and Adlee Dunlow of Emporia; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Boykins United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Davenport, the Rev. Benjamin Thomas and the Rev. Stanley P. 'Bobby' Cabell. Burial, with fire department honors, will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins, and at other times at the residence, 18111 Virginia Ave. Memorials can be made to the Boykins Volunteer Fire Department or to Boykins United Methodist Church.
