Doris Porter Kitchen, 84, the widow of David R. Kitchen Sr., died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at her home. 

Mrs. Kitchen was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and was a daughter of the late Fenton A. and Susie Miles Porter. She was the former co-owner of Kitchen's Grocery Store in Courtland and was a member of Courtland Baptist Church. 

Survivors include one daughter, Susan L. Kitchen of Suffolk; one son, David R. Kitchen Jr. and his wife, Becky, of Franklin; one granddaughter, Melissa K. Gayle and her husband, Brian, of Powhatan; two great-grandchildren, Bradley D. Gayle and Andrew B. Gayle; two sisters, Shirley P. Drake and Frances P. Babb, both of Franklin; and four brothers, Leslie F. Porter and Irvin Porter, both of Franklin, Raymond Davis of Courtland and Bobby Davis of Reno, Nev. Mrs. Kitchen was predeceased by a grandson, David R. Kitchen III. 

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Cemetery , Courtland . The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and suggests that memorials be made to the Courtland Volunteer Fire or Rescue Squads, P.O. Box 449, Courtland , VA 23837.
