Obituary of Sam Powell Jr. SAMUEL POWELL Virginian Pilot - 10-12-2005 FRANKLIN - Sam Powell Jr., 79, died Oct. 10, 2005, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. A lifelong resident of Franklin, he was a son of the late Sam and Rosa Howell Powell and a member of Franklin Baptist Church. Sam was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Asian-Pacific Theater. Sam was a retired paper inspector for quality control in the technical department of Union Camp Corporation after 45 years of service. He was a member of the Charles R. Younts Post 73 of the American Legion and a former member of the Jaycees and Kiwanis. Special family members include Janice and Stancil Lanier; grandchildren, Dustin Lanier, Jill Thorpe and her husband George Lee; great-granddaughter, Haleigh Elizabeth Thorpe; and a host of cousins. He was predeceased by his death companion, Elizabeth Cutchins and a brother, Gary Powell. A funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Franklin Baptist with Rev. Dr. A. Richard Childress officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin.
