RAIFORD Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 23, 1997 James Jones Raiford, 74, a resident of Ivor, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at his home after a long illness. A native of Ivor, he was the son of the late Jerry and Bertha Jones Raiford. He was a retired farmer and a member of Ivor Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the African and European theaters, including the Rhineland Campaign. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pearl Ellen Jones Raiford; two daughters, Margaret R. Smith and her husband, John, Judy R. Carr and her husband, Herbert; a son, James J. ``Jimmy'' Raiford Jr., all of Ivor; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by close family members, Frank Ritter, R.J. Ritter and Randolph Jones. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by the Rev. Dr. Edwin Peeples. Burial will be in Ivor Cemetery . The family will be at the residence, 8392 Scretcholow Drive, Ivor. Memorial donations may be made to the Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad or Ivor Baptist Church.
