Ryland Roberts Rainey, 70, a retired pulp mill supervisor, died May 8, 1992, in a Richmond hospital. 

Mr. Rainey was born in Southampton County and had retired from Union Camp Corp. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Courtland United Methodist Church and Franklin Masonic Lodge. He was the widower of Dorothy Cooley Rainey. 

Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Patsy R. Joyner of Courtland; a son, R.R. Rainey Jr. of Richmond; a sister, Eunice Ashe of Newport News; a brother, Junious Rainey of Franklin; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. 

The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. Thomas G. Lee. Friends may join the family at 23213 Hanging Tree Road, Courtland. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Grace-Jefferson Home for Alzheimer's Patients, 115 N. Jefferson St., Richmond, Va. 23226.
