Obituary of Dr. Emmett Francis Reese III EMMETT FRANCIS REESE III Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Monday, April 28, 2003 COURTLAND - Dr. Emmett Francis Reese III, 80, died Saturday April 26, 2003, at his residence. A native of Southampton County, he was a son of the late Dr. Emmett F. Reese Jr. and Lynie Ridley Reese. He graduated from Courtland High School in 1939 and attended the University of Virginia, receiving his medical degree in 1946. As a member of the armed services, he served in Japan from 1946 to 1949. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Dr. Reese was a retired physician who had been in private practice with his father, and along with his father, owned and operated Reese Drug Store in Courtland . Dr. Reese was a former physician with the state Department of Corrections and a member of Ridley Hunt Club. He was one of the founders of the Courtland Rescue Squad and served many years on the DuPont Scholarship Committee of the University of Virginia. Dr. Reese was a loyal fan of Southampton County athletics and UVA athletics. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Virginia Griffin Reese; two daughters, Sharon E. Reese and her life partner, Dan Brown, of Richmond, and Laura Reese Lass and her husband, Tim, of Franklin; and two grandchildren, Tyler Christopher Lass and Kaylee Rebecca Lass. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Courtland , with the Rev. James W. Browder III and the Rev. Edmund Pickup officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery . The family will receive friends at the church after the service and requests memorials be made to Shand's Park, c/o Town Council of Courtland , VA 23837.
