Avis Hooker Rhodes, 88, died April 3, 2000, in Southampton Memorial Hospital. 

Born in Isle of Wight County, she was a daughter of the late Robert L. and Annie Siske Hooker and the widow of William Jasper Rhodes Sr. Mrs. Rhodes was a retired nurse from Southampton Memorial Hospital. She was a 50-year member of the Franklin Woman's Club, a member of the Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, High Street United Methodist Church and its Louise Pace Matthews Circle. 

Survivors include a daughter, Jean R. Boone of Chesapeake; two sons, William J. Rhodes Jr. and his wife, Gene, of Franklin and James E. Rhodes of Richmond; four grandchildren, Katy R. Walden, Kimberly M. Rhodes and W. Scott Boone, all of Virginia Beach, and Elizabeth Noel of Seaford, Va.; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Carolyn Phillips Rhodes. 

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Poplar Spring Cemetery with the Rev. Edward C. Johnson officiating. Memorials may be made to High Street UMC, 301 W. 1st Ave., Franklin, VA 23851. Wright Funeral Home is in charge.
