Obituary of Donald Edward Rountree Sr. DONALD EDWARD ROUNTREE SR. Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Thursday, July 27, 2000 Donald Edward ``Sonny'' Rountree Sr. died July 26, 2000, at the East Pavilion. He was born April 29, 1918, in Newsoms, Va., a son of the late Daniel B. and Maude Cutchins Rountree. He was a retired state registered building contractor and a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in and around England and ending his naval career in Ocracoke, N.C. A graduate of Newsoms High School, he played baseball and basketball for several years and continued to play sports after high school for different communities. A member of Newsoms Hunt Club, Sonny loved fishing and hunting, especially with his brothers, and he was good at both. He was a member of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margaret Johnson Rountree; a son, Donald E. Rountree Jr. and his wife, Jane, of Henrico, N.C.; a daughter, Dianne Elizabeth Rountree of Franklin; a brother, Lemuel V. Rountree and his wife, Hilda, of Newsoms; four grandchildren, Karen R. Kane and her husband, Patrick, of Chester, Kevin Rountree and his wife, Susi, of Atlanta, Ga., Cheryl Brandberg and her husband, John, of Augusta, Ga., and Anna Lindahl of Orlando, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Kara and Keri Kane and Jake and Emma Brandberg; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his stepmother, Carrie Vincent Rountree; three brothers and a sister, Benjamin, Valon and Guy Rountree and Ollie R. Blythe. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. James W. Browder III and the Rev. Charlene Beethoven officiating. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park . The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and suggests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association c/o Mary Frances Newsome, P.O.
