Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Thursday, May 15, 1997 Allen (A J) Saunders Jr., 61, of the 100 block of Wellons St. died May 14, 1997, in Obici Hospital. Mr. Saunders was born in Southampton County, the son of the late Willie Allen and Otelia Gay Saunders. He was a truck driver for Greensville Transport, Suffolk. He was a former member of the National Guard and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Holland Road, Suffolk. Survivors include his wife, Dawn Butler Saunders; three daughters, Sharon J. Benson of Chesapeake, Theresa D. Welsh of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Wanda D. Bryant of Suffolk; two sons, Dwayne E. Casper of Windsor and Cpl. Richard A. Saunders of Jacksonville, N.C.; seven sisters, Sarah F. Edwards, Willie A. Clark, Rebecca S. Hedgepeth, all of Windsor, Mary Elizabeth Munford, Nancy S. Hall, Brenda S. Marshall, all of Franklin, and Charlotte M. Woodie of Conowingo, Md.; brother, Johnnie R. Saunders of Franklin; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his former wife, Shirley A. Burgess of Windsor. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, by the Rev. Ben Scofield. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park , Franklin. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
