Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - November 8, 2001 John Daniel Smith Jr., 66, retired manager of Coastal Chemical Co., died Nov. 6, 2001 in Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in Lancaster, Va., he was a son of the late John Daniel Smith Sr. and Eloise Curtis Smith. An Army veteran and a 1959 graduate of VPI with a degree in Agronomy, he had been with Coastal Chemical since 1967 and his passion was working with farmers, crops and people. John loved the outdoors and fishing, especially in the Chesapeake Bay. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary Eustace Smith; a daughter, Dr. Kathy Smith of Athens, Ga.; a son, J.D. Smith III and his wife, Yvette of Sedley; two sisters, Eloise S. Mallon and husband, Ron of North, Va., and Marian S. Pouchot and husband the Rev. David A. Pouchot of Belfast, Maine; a brother, Zay Curtis Smith and wife, Lillian Ann of Warsaw, Va.; and a grandson, J. Daniel Smith IV. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. David A. Pouchot officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery .
