 Lillian S. Burkette, 87, formerly of Suffolk, died Friday, March 6, 1998, in Chesapeake. 
Mrs. Burkette was born in Arcadia, Fla., and was the daughter of the late Edward Williams and May Yelvington Murrell. She was predeceased by her first husband, Francis Powell Smith Sr., her second husband, Odel Lee Burkette and her daughter, Faith S. Bickford. Mrs. Burkette had been a news correspondent for The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star newspapers. She was a member of the Palma Sola Presbyterian Church in Bradenton, Fla., and Daughters of the American Revolution. 
Survivors include her son, F. Powell Smith Jr., of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Samuel Gordon Bickford III, Ann B. Fouse, David G. Bickford and Stan Boyette; and two great-grandchildren, Adam Bickford and Christopher Fouse. 
A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. Burial will be private in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. 
There will be no public viewing or visitation. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service. 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Portsmouth-Chesapeake Unit, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23513.
