Obituary of Myrtle Jones Spivey MYRTLE J SPIVEY Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - February 17, 2004 Myrtle Jones Spivey died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Obici Hospital. She was 85 years old. Mrs. Spivey was born Oct. 13, 1918. She graduated from Radford College as a home economics major and had a varied career as a hospital dietitian, a teacher, a social worker and a U.S. Postal Service clerk in the Windsor, Va., Post Office where her late husband, John Alton "Tip" Spivey, served as postmaster. She had a keen interest in sports, first as a college basketball player, earning the lifelong nickname of "Ducky" for her ability to outmaneuver her opponents by ducking under and around them. In later years she was a loyal fan of the Virginia Tech basketball and football teams. She was a talented seamstress and a good cook, noted for her wonderful pies. She enjoyed the challenge of bridge games with her friends in Windsor. She was Nanny to her grandchildren and took great delight and pride in their growth and accomplishments. She is survived by her daughters, Ann Spivey Carr and husband Lew of Suffolk, Cynthia Spivey Albertelly and husband Bruce of West Hartford, Conn.; and grandchildren, Susannah Carr of Richmond, Jonathan Albertelly and Bryan Albertelly of West Hartford; a sister, Mrs. Raymond E. Plasters Sr. of Covington, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Marion E. Howell of Windsor, Va. A memorial service for Mrs. Spivey will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Colosse Baptist Church. The family will greet friends at a reception in the church fellowship hall following the service.
