Born in Emporia, Va., he was a son of the late John Clifton and Ida Clary Stainback. He was an Army veteran, a member of the Charles R. Younts American Legion Post 73 and a member of High Street United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Shirley Cornwell Stainback; a daughter, Linda S. McGuire and her husband, Daniel, of Franklin; a son, John Stainback and his wife, Luresa, of Franklin; two sisters, Jesse E. Gerald of Hopewell and Lucy England of Claremont; a brother, John Clifton Stainback of Emporia; and two grandchildren, Tiffany and Michelle Stainback. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward C. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park .
