FRANKLIN - Laura Stephens Birdsong, 76, died July 29, 2002 at The Village at Woods Edge.
Born in Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Rev. William Richard and Annie Johnson Stephens, and the widow of Gordon G. Birdsong, M.D. Mrs. Birdsong, a graduate of Mars Hill Junior College and the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing, began her nursing career in the emergency room at MCV. She then became a nursing instructor at Lakeview Hospital in Suffolk, now Obici Hospital, where she later worked as a nursing supervisor. Mrs. Birdsong was also a head nurse for McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond. She was a former member of the Franklin Garden Club, the Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a member of Cypress Cove Country Club. She was a member of Franklin Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Anne Birdsong Anderson and her husband Paul, and two grandchildren, Laura Hill Anderson and Samuel Gordon Anderson, all of Richmond.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Michael J. Clingenpeel officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery . The family will receive friends immediately following the service at The Village at Woods Edge and suggests that memorials be made to the Franklin Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 208 N. High St., Franklin, Va., or the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Ruth Petty, 116 Southampton Road, Franklin, VA 23851.
