Obituary of Joseph Taylor Stewart Sr.

Joseph Taylor Stewart Sr., 86, died Oct. 10, 1998, in his home. 

He was born in Pickens, S.C., on Feb. 20, 1912, the son of the late Sunie Arneta and Taylor Hillhouse Stewart. He spent his early years in South Carolina and Florida. After working the family farm, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) as a construction superintendent and directed the building of multiple roads, dams, fish hatcheries and other public works in North and South Carolina. He joined the U.S. Forest Service in 1940 and moved to Franklin, Va., in 1945. He retired after 45 years of service to actively pursue his hobby and vocation of woodworking. 

Joe was a member of Franklin Baptist Church where he taught Bruner Bible School class and several other Sunday School classes. He served two terms on the Board of Deacons, one as chairman of the board. He was chairman of the Grounds Committee for three years. A member of Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 151, Joe served as secretary for 30 years, was past master, a district instructor for 10 years, past district deputy grandmaster and honorary 50 year member. He was active in many community service projects. 

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Myra Fendley Stewart; his son, retired U.S.A.F. Col. Joseph T. Stewart Jr. and his wife, Yvonne; his daughter, Jacqueline Stewart Howell and her husband, William H. Howell III; four grandchildren, W. Stewart Howell and his wife, Jackie, Stephanie Yvonne Stewart, Susan Howell Suiter and her husband, Ghi, and Laura Lynn Stewart; three great-grandchildren, Robert Colton Howell, Emily Arneta Suiter and Jackson Taylor Howell; seven sisters, Mary Moon, Lillian Todd, Leflesha Cox, Oveline King, Avanelle McCord, Beatrice Brown of Texas, and Betty Woolbright of Georgia; two brothers, Lewis Stewart and the Rev. David Stewart of South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will always remember him for the lasting impression he left behind. Two brothers, James and Samuel Stewart, and a sister, Moneta Edens, preceded him in death. 

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Franklin Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Roy E. DeBrand and the Rev. Sharon E. James. Burial, with Masonic Rites, will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his daughter, Jackie Howell, 28089 Handsom Road, Franklin. Memorial contributions may be made to Franklin Baptist Church, 208 N. High St., Franklin, Va. 23851 or Southampton Memorial Hospice, 100 Fairview Drive, Franklin, Va. 23851.
