Frances Thorpe Butler, 86, died Oct. 14, 2003 at Southampton Memorial Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Newsoms , she was a daughter of the late Vernon Darden Thorpe Sr. and Bessie Barrett Thorpe, and the widow of Tim Butler. Mrs. Butler was retired from Leggett's department store and was a member of Barnes United Methodist Church. She was active in the choir, Sunday school teaching and the UMW. In helping write the history of Barnes Church, Mrs. Butler is quoted saying, "I have fond memories of Barnes Church. I grew up in this church and was baptized many years ago by the Rev. R.H. Marks. I have cherished memories of teaching the kingergarten class for about 16 years, and the children will always have a special place in my heart."
Survivors include two nieces, Betty-Moore Scavone and husband, Chip, of Richmond and Marjorie T. McClenny and husband, Joe; two great-nephews, Tyson and Taylor McClenny, all of Courtland; and several cousins, including Lynda T. Updike of Newsoms , Faye T. Coats of South Carolina and Anna T. Commander of Virginia Beach. Mrs. Butler was predeceased by two brothers, Vernon D. Thorpe Jr. and R. Barrett Thorpe.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hollywood Cemetery , Newsoms , with the Rev. Dr. Gary Hartman officiating. Memorials may be made to Barnes United Methodist church, c/o Betty W. Darden, 33701 Statesville Road, Newsoms , VA 23874. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge of arrangements.
