Obituary of Margarette Louise Joyner Umphlett MARGARETTE LOUISE JOYNER UMPHLETT Virginian Pilot - 06-18-2002, B-7 YORKTOWN - Margarette Louise "Granny" Umphlett, 84, went to be with Jesus on Monday, June 17, 2002. She was born in Portsmouth to the late Gracie Mae McCauley Joyner and John Ernest Joyner. She was the widow of Crafton Isaac Umphlett. She had been a Peninsula resident since 1980. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton and had been a member of the church choir. She was formerly a member of First Friends Church in Portsmouth, where she was active for many years and where she also sang in the church choir. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Crafton Umphlett and Marianne "Mimi" Unphlett of Yorktown; four grandchildren and their spouses, David and Amber Umphlett of Pleasantville, N.J., Scott and Amy Umphlett of Newport News, John and Emily Umphlett of Bennington, VT, and Suzanne and David Fletcher of Palmyra, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Abigail Renee Umphlett, Madelyn Kate Umphlett, Sarah Beth Umphlett, Malachi Samuel Fletcher and Chase Isaac Umphlett; two sisters, Alice Griffin of Portsmouth and Evelyn Lewis of Chesapeake; and three sisters-in-law, Joyce Joyner of Chesapeake, Margaret Sears of Elliott City, Md., and Doris Ashe of Portsmouth. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Altmeyer Funeral Home in Newport News. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Liberty Baptist Church by Pastor Danny Forshee and Brother David Fletcher. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth.
