Mr. Varnell was born in Elm City, N.C., and was a longtime Southampton county farmer. He was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, a 27-year member of the Army Reserve, a member of Courtland Ruritan Club and Nottoway Investment Club. Survivors include his wife, Bette Jackson Varnell; his daughter, Beth Varnell Nace, and her husband, Edward, of Franklin; his son, Jonathan Edward Varnell of Courtland ; his mother, Doris Gardner Varnell of Elm City; his brother, George W. Varnell of Marietta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Lee and April Nace. He was predeceased by his father, John Warren Varnell. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Courtland Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas R. Speight officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery . The family will receive friends at the residence, and suggest that memorials be made to Courtland Baptist Church. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
