Mr. Whitley was born in Hertford County, N.C., a son of the late James and Laura Edwards Whitley. He was a retired welder and a member of the High Street United Methodist Church where he had been secretary of the Men's Bible Class. He was a former member of the Franklin Fire Department, the Hunterdale Ruritan Club, Woodmen of the World and the Moose Lodge. He was also an avid fisherman. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine J. Perry; a brother, Robert Whitley of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Patricia Traylor, Larry R. Johnson and William (Bill) F. Johnson. He was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers, Janie Porter, Margaret Butler, Ruby Story, Mabel Drake, and Jim, Carson and Joe Whitley. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. Edward Johnson with burial in Southampton Memorial Park .
