DAPHNE LORRAINE WILLIAMS VAUGHAN DUNN

Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 21, 2003 

Daphne Lorraine Williams Vaughan Dunn, 81, died Dec. 19, 2003, in her home. She was born March 5, 1922, in Southampton County, daughter of Arthur Grover and Fannie Mae Joyner Williams. Valedictorian of her Dreweyville High School graduating class, she received her Normal Professional Certificate from Farmville State Teachers College (Longwood), and graduated from Old Dominion College (University). 

A dedicated teacher for 41 years, she held membership in numerous professional organizations. Included among them were the Isle of Wight Education Association, Virginia Education Association, National Education Association, and National Reading Council. Active in all facets of education, she was honored with a lifetime membership in the Parent Teacher Association and named "Teacher of the Year." She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honor society for women in education, held numerous offices, including the office of president of Gamma Epsilon Chapter, served as a member of the Tidewater Coordinating Council and was chapter recipient of the coveted "Honoring Our Own" award. 

A tireless advocate for children, volunteer, fund-raiser and leader in the Windsor community, she served on numerous committees and boards, helping to establish a town library. She was a member of the Windsor Womans Club for 60 years, serving two terms as president. She enjoyed actively participating in the Christian Womens Club and Homemakers Club. A member of the Windsor Christian Church, she served on the Board of Christian Education, was a Sunday School teacher, active in Womens Fellowship, choir member, lay speaker and Deacon. 

Preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, John Shelton Vaughan and second husband, Arnold Thomas Dunn, she is survived by two daughters, Linda Vaughan Brittle and husband, Marshall Kenneth Sr. of Bristol and Ann Shelton Vaughan Gambrell and husband, William Earl IV of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Lorraine Leclare Brittle of Columbia, S.C., Marshall Kenneth Brittle Jr. of Charleston, S.C., Ellen Rivers Gambrell and Connor Vaughan Gambrell of Virginia Beach. She is survived by four stepchildren, Brenda Dunn Johnson, Jean Dunn Healy, Arnold Thomas Dunn Jr. and Kenneth Wayne Dunn. She is also survived by two sisters, Erma Dale Williams Joyner and Leona Williams Davis; three brothers, Sydney Thomas Williams, David Collin Williams Sr. and Gene Wesley Williams; beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, wonderful friends, colleagues, and former students of whom she was so proud and held so dear. 

A funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Windsor Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Basil Ballard. A private interment will follow at the Windsor Cemetery . In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Vaughan Scholarship established in her honor for future teachers, Windsor Congregational Church, 1 Windsor Blvd., Windsor, VA 23487; the American Cancer Society, 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434; or to a charity of choice. R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Suffolk, is handling arrangements. 

Deep appreciation and gratitude are extended assisting medical staff and personnel for their care throughout her illness.
