He attended Kings Business College and received his associate's degree from Richmond Community College of Hamlet, N.C. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Adelaide Powell Blalock; a daughter, Julie B. Peters of Rockingham, N.C.; a son, John F. Blalock Jr. of Mars Hill, N.C.; and a sister, Virginia B. Morman of Roswell, Ga.
