COBB, GALLANT CONFEDERATE AND A GOOD CITIZEN, PASSES W. R. L. Cobb died Saturday, January 5, 1929, at the home of his son, L. M. Cobb, in Sebrell in the 85th year of his life. In September 1927, he sustained a stroke of paralysis and had been an invalid since that time, suffering a relapse on December 30 and remaining unconscious almost to the end. Mr. Cobb was the son of the late Leonard Cobb and Mrs. Mary Cobb of this county. In 1869 he married Miss Effie Vick of this county, who died in 1872, leaving one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Whitehead, now of Emporia. In 1876 he married Miss Mary Anna Ricks of Southampton, who died only a few years ago. Since the death of his beloved wife he had made his home in Sebrell with Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Cobb. He is survived by three sons, L. M. Cobb and W. T. Cobb of Sebrell and W. R. L. Cobb Jr., of Courtland; by his daughter, Mrs. Whitehead; a sister, Mrs. P. F. Brittle of Ivor; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many relatives and a wide circle of friends. He was a brother of the late Henry Cobb, a well-known merchant and postmaster in Franklin at the time of his death, and of the late A. F. Cobb of Ivor, who was Commissioner of the Revenue on this side of the river for a number of years. Mr. Cobb, "Wick" as his old comrades and friends always called him, was a valiant soldier of the Confederacy, serving under Robert E. Lee from the fall of 1862 until the surrender at Appomattox. He was a member of Company "K," 24th Virginia Cavalry, and his was the common lot of those brave sons of the South, having many narrow escapes in battle and going for days without food as the hopes of the Confederacy grew dim in the last period of the war. He carried into his life as a peaceful citizen the many sterling qualities of Christian manhood which had characterized his career as a soldier, his many friends loving him for his sterling virtues and respecting him for his worth. He had been a consistent and lifelong communicant of the Methodist Church, a loyal member of Urquhart-Gillette Camp of Confederate Veterans and he belonged to the Masonic fraternity, being a member of the old "Door of Truth" Lodge at Sebrell until it disbanded. In politics he was an uncompromising Democrat, always remaining true to and defending the policies and principles of his party. A large assemblage of friends gathered Monday afternoon [7 January 1929] at the home of his son in Sebrell to pay a final tribute of respect, and the body was taken to the old "Barn Tavern" cemetery nearby where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. H. Fielding of the Capron M.E. Church in the absence of Mr. Cobb's pastor, Rev. S. E. Jones of Courtland, who was ill.
