Duke were held Wednesday afternoon [1 Oct 1930] at 3:30 o‚Äôclock at the Holland Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. W. C. Hook, the Rev. N. G. Newman, The Rev. R. E. Brittle and the Rev. H. J. Davis. William Darden sang ‚ÄúBeautiful Isle of Somewhere" as a solo; a duet ‚ÄúThe Old Rugged Cross" was sung by Mrs. W. C. Hook and Mrs. Wright. A quartette composed of Mrs. Hook, Mrs. Wright, William Darden, and Mr. Carter rendered the selection Sometime We‚Äôll Understand." There were many beautiful floral designs, and the casket was covered with a lovely pall of Easter lilies and fern. Active pallbearers were W. C. Harrell, Henry Carr,W. J. Wright, Noah Broan, Alva Norfleet, Cordon Copeland, H. E. Byrd, and Lewis Duke; honorary, E. T. Holland, Claude Norfleet, J. L. Hare, Claud Skinner, J. V. Harrell, Elmo Norfleet, E. T. Raiford, James Carr, J. D. Rawls, Steve Wright, W. L. Jollay, William Daughtrey, W. J. Skinner, Hardy Holland, R. W. Duke, Frank Wright. Interment was made in the Holland cemetery. DUKE DIES OF INJURIES SUFFOLK, Oct. 1-Mrs. Annie C. Duke, 50, victim of a Sunday afternoon [28 Sep 1930] automobile accident on the Suffolk-Franklin highway, and who since has been under treatment at Lakeview Hospital, died yesterday morning [30 Sep 1930] at 2:30 o'clock. She was the widow of Thomas Duke, who died five months ago. She was a native of Nansemond County, where she spent her life. Surviving are two children, Mrs. Robert S. March, of the county, who was with Mrs. Duke at the time of the accident, and who is still under treatment at Lakeview Hospital, and Obie Duke of the county another occupant of the death car, who was slightly hurt; two grandchildren Robert March, Jr., who badly injured in the accident, and Annie Virginia March, who escaped with slight injuries; two sisters, Pattie Cross and Mrs. Dempsey L. Sumner, of Nansemond County; two brothers, J. I. and R. L. Cross, both of Nansemond County, and several nieces and nephews. The body of Mrs. Duke was viewed by Dr. O. R. Yates, coroner, and an inquest was set for Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
