Born in Isle of Wight County, he was a retired shipfitter and was a member of Berea Christian Church. He was a Mason. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucille Cora Gwaltney; a daughter, Mrs. Ann G. Outlaw of Suffolk; two brothers, James C. Gwaltney and Richard E. Gwaltney, both of Newport News; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday 28 May 1983 in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. W. A. Grissom and the Rev. Robert Bennett. The family will be at Mrs. Outlaw's residence, 129 Outlaw Lane. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Bennett's Creek Rescue Squad. R. W. Baker & Co.
