Amanda Hanks Obituary Amanda Shockley Hanks March 25, 1939 - January 25, 2020 Franklin – Amanda Georgia Shockley Hanks, 80, passed away January 25, 2020 at Consulate Healthcare of Windsor. Mrs. Hanks was a native of Carroll County and was a daughter of the late John Michael Shockley and Blanche Dalton Shockley. She was also predeceased by her daughter Courtney Hanks Hayworth and two sisters and one brother, Lillie Alderman, Flossie Hall and Martin Shockley. She was a retired teacher in the Southampton County School system after 34 years of service. She had taught, English, History, and French at Southampton High School. She had previously taught for one year in the Gates County NC School system, six years in the Carroll County School system, and three years in the Norfolk City School system at Norview Junior High School. She had Masters degrees from both VPI and Radford University. She attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 58 years Delmer Gray “D.G.” Hanks, one sister in law Avis Shockley, nieces and nephews, a special “adopted” granddaughter Kayla Brooke White and special “adopted” children, Donna and Bryan Lafferty and Tucker White and Jim White. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM Wednesday, January 29, 2020 in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev Scott Baker officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Hanks will be taken to Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral home in Hillsville, VA for services and burial on Friday.
