Hurd II, 32, an air cargo pilot, died Friday, May 10 , at Aquabilla, Puerto Rico, when his plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Boriquen Airport. Mr. Hurd was born in Rockledge and raised in Cocoa Beach. He lived in Rincon, Puerto Rico, and had been a resident of the Caribbean for 11 years. He was employed by Four Star Air Cargo Co. Mr. Hurd graduated from Cocoa Beach High School in 1976 with honors. He attended Brevard Community College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach; where he earned his commercial pilot license. He also held a multi-engine land and sea rating. He was a member of Riverside Presbyterian Church in Cocoa Beach. Family members said he loved the Caribbean area and had lived on St. Thomas, St. Croix and Puerto Rico. He loved surfing, flying and playing on the beach with his dog. He had a ready smile, a great love of life and many friends. Survivors include his mother, Louise Beale Hurd of Cocoa Beach; father, Clark Hurd of Melbourne; sister, Lu Anne Merritt of Winter Park and Ellen Hubbard of Brunsville, N.C.; and special friend, Tere Alicea of Ponce, Puerto Rico. No calling hours are scheduled. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Florida Memorial Gardens, north of Melbourne.
