(Special) John Thomas Joyner, 91, prominent citizen of Southampton County and Confederate veteran, died this morning [13 February 1933] at his home in the county. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. L. L. Scott, of Franklin, and Mrs. Clinton Emory, of Portsmouth, and one son, Ernest Joyner, of Portsmouth. Mr. Joyner was a member of Company I, Thirty-fourth Virginia Infantry in the War Between the States, and saw service during the entire four years. The Battle of the Crater being his last engagement. He was one of the few surviving Confederate soldiers left in this section. Funeral services will be held at Bethel Friends Church, Tuesday afternoon, February 14[1933], at 1 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Stanfield. Interment will be made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin. Active pallbearers will be J. C. Scott, Tony Cobb, James Joyner, B. Drake, Exum White, Linwood Bradshaw, J. G. Joyner and Sam Cutchin.
