Lewis Succumbs At 54 Emmett Matthew Lewis, 54, of 4703½ Huntington Ave., died apparently of a heart attack in Riverview Hospital about 8:00 P.M. yesterday [1 Sep 1952]. Mr. Lewis, employed as a yard conductor with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, became ill while on duty with the C&O and was taken to the hospital. He died shortly after arrival. A native of Sussex County, Mr. Lewis made his home in Newport News for 34 years. He was a member of the Grace Methodist Church and Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Hancock Lewis; six daughters, Mr. Carl Pentz, Phoebeus; Mrs. W. L. McGuire, Mrs. Ned Walter Edwards, Mrs. Edith Lewis; Miss Molly Jo Lewis and Miss Peggy Lee Lewis all of Newport News; two sons, Robert E. Lewis, Warwick and Pfc David N. The Rev. Purnell Bailey, pastor, will officiate and burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The body will remain at the Peninsula Funeral Home until 1:30 P.M. at which time it will be placed in the church. Active pallbearers will be R. O. Graves, A. C. Graves, T. H. Gray, E. L. Watts, F. M.
