Linda Nelson officiated the service. ## Transcript Julian Lloyd Smith Birth: 17 April 1921 Death: 22 August 2016 ------------------------------------- Laurinburg Julian Lloyd Smith, 95, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016 at Scotia Village. A graveside burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 29, 2016 at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. in the Morris Morgan Center at Scotia Village in Laurinburg officiated by Rev. Linda Nelson. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Scotia Village. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marian Parker Smith of Laurinburg; his son, Richard Smith (Linda) of Marysville, OH; his daughter, Nan Maples (Craig) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Smith, Sara, Emily and Scott Maples; and five great-grandchildren. Born April 17, 1921 in Pitt County, NC, he was a son of the late William Lloyd and Delia Clements Smith. He attended UNC at Chapel Hill where he played basketball as a student then went on to serve in the US Navy during WWII. After completing his time of service, he returned to UNC to receive his master's degree and later a Ph.D from Ohio State. He worked at Grimsley and Page High Schools as a coach and teacher and later as a basketball coach and professor at Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH.
