Crafton I. Umphlett  

NEWPORT NEWS – Crafton Isaac "Pappy" Umphlett, 65, of 154 Bloom Drive, died Thursday 2 December 1982 in Mary Immaculate Hospital.  

Born in Pasquotank County, N.C., he was a Newport News resident for two and a half years. He spent most of his life in Portsmouth.  

He retired from Seaboard Coast Line Railroad with 42½ years of service. He was a member of First Friends Church, Portsmouth, and also attended Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church.  

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Margarette Joyner Umphlett; a son, Jerry C. Umphlett of Newport News; his mother, Mrs. Grizzell Cartwright Umphlett of Portsmouth; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret U. Sears of Ellicott City, Md., and Mrs. Evelyn U. Antley and Mrs. Doris U. Ashe, both of Portsmouth; and four grandchildren.  

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday 5 December 1982 in First Friends Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church and the Rev. Eugene Wright of First Friends Church, Portsmouth.  

Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth.  

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight 4 December 1982 in Jennell-Umphlett Funeral Home and from 1:30 to 2:20 p.m. Sunday 5 December 1982 in First Friends Church.
