Sawyer was an outstanding high school football and baseball player, avid fisherman, hunter and Boy Scout. He most recently was a freshman petroleum engineering major at the University of Texas in Austin. He is survived by his father, Lee John Updike, his mother Sheri Roberts-Updike and his brother Michael Hartwell Updike. Other survivors include his paternal Grandmother Mrs. Lynda T. Updike, aunts Kelley Updike (Rick), Jennifer U. Cuthbertson (Anthony), and cousins David, Emily and Jenna Cuthbertson. He was predeceased by his grandfather Glenn H. Updike.
