Obituary of Elizabeth Emily (Lizzy) Whitley 07 JAN 1873 - 22 SEP 1947 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mrs. Lizzie W. Bailey Mrs. Lizzie W. Bailey, 74, died at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital Monday night [22 September 1947]after an illness of 10 days. Mrs. Bailey was born and reared near the North Carolina and Virginia line. She was the widow of the late J. D. Bailey. For a number of years she ran a boarding house in Roanoke Rapids, and for the past year and a half she had made her home in Franklin, Virginia, with her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Neal. Funeral services were held from the First Christian Church Wednesday afternoon [24 Sep 1947] at two o'clock and were conducted by the Rev. Kermit Traylor, of Portsmouth, Va., and the Rev. John J. Langston of Roanoke Rapids. Interment was in the Franklin cemetery [Popular Spring cemetery]. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Daisy Daniel and Mrs. Lucy Evans, of Roanoke Rapids, and Mrs. Neal; six sons, Clarence, Jim and Paul, of Roanoke Rapids, Everette of Paterson, N. J., Walter of Charlotte and Bob of Rock Hill, S. C.; one sister, Mrs. Ethel Hollard of Norfolk; one brother, Henry Whitley, of Como, N. C., and 21 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
