Born in Richmond and raised in Courtland, he was the son of the late Lawrence Nathanial Williams and Dorothy Story Williams. Michael was a 1972 graduate of Southampton High School and a graduate of Newport News Apprentice School. He was a long time farmer and was brought up in Courtland United Methodist Church.
